Chamber Chairman hails "A new beginning for Crewe"

South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce has hailed the HS2 Superhub announcement as a “fantastic new beginning” for Crewe.

Chairman John Dunning, who has long-campaigned for better rail links to the South, applauded the decision saying: “This is the most exciting news for a generation.

“It will deliver immediate benefits for the whole of the North West in particular South Cheshire and our neighbours in Staffordshire.

“And the fact we are now looking at a date brought forward five years to 2027 is a bonus.

“It may seem a long way but for local companies it means they can plan ahead with certainty.

“For those looking to invest in Crewe, having a HS2 station on their doorstep will make it their first choice for relocation.

“All this spells new jobs and prosperity.

“Yes there will be short-term benefits in terms of construction jobs but what local people, and local firms want, is a solid future for Crewe. They now have just that.”

Although Stoke led a strong campaign to have a station on the HS2 route, Crewe was tipped as a winner many months ago.

High speed rail boss Sir David Higgins made the long-awaited announcement on Monday.

Mr Dunning congratulated Cheshire East Council, Pete Waterman and Edward Timpson MP on supporting Crewe’s Superhub bid.

He said it created a “positive vibe” about Crewe and reaffirmed its location as a great place to invest and do business.

He added: “This is on top of the road infrastructure investment we can see taking shape in South Cheshire right now.

“HS2 will unlock development sites and generate new offices, factories, warehouses and homes spread wide across the area bringing benefits to North Staffordshire too.

“Everyone, including our neighbours in the Potteries can look ahead with renewed optimism.

“It’s great for the economy and all the people who live in the area. A new beginning for a town famed for rail travel.”
