Galliford Try Builds Firm Foundations With New College HNC

Employees from a leading house building and construction company have signed up for a brand new Higher Education course at South Cheshire College.

A dozen students from Galliford Try are attending the College’s Crewe campus to study the Construction and the Built Environment Higher National Certificate (HNC).

The full programme, which leads to a Level 4 Construction Site Supervision qualification, is divided into two parts and has been tailored to meet the needs of Galliford Try employees.

Students will work towards a technical award, which is site based, and consists of four modules, before choosing another four optional modules which have been chosen specifically by Galliford Try.

Those on the course will benefit from state-of-the-art construction facilities at South Cheshire College where they will work towards their qualification one day a week.

Richard Lunt, Assistant Director for Engineering and Construction at South Cheshire College, is delighted with the new course uptake.

Richard said: “We have developed a good relationship with Galliford Try and are delighted that the majority of students undertaking this new Higher Education course are from the company.

“This is an excellent programme which will give the course group the skills and knowledge to complement what they do out on live construction sites across the UK.”

Stephanie Wright from the College’s Work Based Learning team worked with employers to promote the course and has successfully enrolled 14 course members.

Steph said: “It’s great that this new HNC course is being launched with a really strong presence from Galliford Try – a company which has an excellent reputation in the construction industry.

“We are looking forward to strengthening our links with Galliford Try and developing courses and programmes which are tailor-made for other employers across the region.”

Galliford Try is a UK top-ten contractor and constituent member of the FTSE 250 index.

Some of the major UK projects the company has undertaken include the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon, the St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel and Hotel Football which overlooks Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium.

Karl Jackson, Higher Education Co-ordinator at South Cheshire College, added: “This is another excellent example of how the College is working in partnership with employers to develop higher qualifications which meet the skills demand.”
