Malta Enterprise (ME) is the country’s economic development agency, tasked with attracting new foreign direct investment as well as facilitating the growth of the country.

While not many British companies would want the upheaval of moving jurisdiction there can be an advantage in setting up a base in Malta. Co-location can add a useful dimension, not just during the period of Brexit uncertainty but in terms of allowing for growth in the medium to long term. Malta has proved an ideal location because of its use of the English language, traditional ties to the UK and its economic benefits in terms of being pro-enterprise with financial incentives and skilled labour on offer. It has good communication links and, given its geographical position, is a useful springboard for anyone wanting to trade with Africa and the Middle East.

Malta has very strong ties with the UK. For example, their legal system is based on English law and many of their health professionals train in the UK. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has set up a specific taskforce, the Malta-UK business promotion taskforce, to ensure Malta maintains a strong relationship irrespective of Brexit.  They believe the excellent relationship with the UK will remain irrespective of EU membership.
Following a short film on Malta and presentations by Mario Galea, Chief Advisor of ME and Melanie Debattista (Investment Promotion Officer), delegates will have the opportunity for one to one meetings with the speakers.

Mario Galea, Chief Advisor, Malta Enterprise

Mr Galea was the CEO of ME between June 2016 and July 2019 after serving as CEO at Malta Industrial Parks and principal chief officer at ME. During his term he oversaw a record number of projects approved by ME, including the establishment of major new businesses in Malta, such as Crane Currency and Barts and the London School of Dentistry and Medicine, as well as the expansion of practically all major FDI companies.
He was also instrumental in building a number of niche sectors including ICT, Aviation and Life sciences, including pharma and medical cannabis. Mr Galea is now the chief advisor to ME.

Melanie Debattista, Investment Promotion Officer, Malta Enterprise

Ms Debattista joined ME early in 2019. She has been entrusted to offer solutions to British companies concerned about their post-Brexit operations.
Melanie joined ME with experience in M&A transactions in mainland Europe and the UK. She was involved in initiating the leads and following them through the whole process including due diligence and negotiations up till closure. Before this experience, she was also exposed to EU funding whereby she helped Maltese entities avail themselves of funds available to them. Melanie attained her first degree in Business Enterprise (first class) from MCAST in collaboration with Fraunhofer IAO. She pursued her studies and graduated with an MBA from Anglia Ruskin University in 2018.
