ACCREWE – Assist Charities in Crewe

Created by

a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink and means of warmth.  We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices.”  What shall I put you down for?"

"Nothing!" Scrooge replied.

Precisely!  Precisely nothing.  That’s all you have to part with to help local charities and community groups when you use easyfundraising (ef).  Yes, it’s me, banging on about this again.  Please let me know if there is something fundamentally flawed with the idea because I honestly can’t see why more people are not taking the opportunity to divert money towards those causes that we all hold dear.

For those of you not familiar with the workings of ef (and there are other, similar sites out there, I believe) you can find out about it here:

Here is a brief resume:

·  1. Start at easyfundraising

Let's say you want to buy a book from Amazon. Instead of going to, you go to first - or you can use the easyfundraising toolbar

·  2. Make a purchase

You click from the easyfundraising website through to Amazon to make your purchase. The price of the book is exactly the same as if you'd visited Amazon directly

·  3. Get a donation

After you have bought your book, Amazon will make a donation to your cause as a thank you for shopping with them. easyfundraising collect these donations for them, and it costs nothing!

Amazon is used here as an example of the 2700 online retailers that are part of the scheme.  Unless you are buying tartan paint, your shopping needs are likely to be satisfied by one or more of the retailers available.  Individuals and businesses are free to take advantage of these donations.

Now, of course, once you have started to raise money you can publicise the fact however you see fit (or ‘wish to remain anonymous’).  It would be quite nice to be able to show to other towns in Britain that Crewe ‘has a heart’, which is what ACCREWE is designed to do.  It will simply be a list of those businesses which have chosen to ‘Assist Charities in Crewe’ through ef (and thus, accrue funds for them).  From time to time – and if the businesses are willing – the list could be used on publicity materials.  It is all very vague at the moment, I know, but surely it is a list you would rather be on than not.

The way I envisage it working is that there is an up-to-date list of local causes and that all businesses raise funds for the same cause for a given period of time – a month, perhaps.  At the end of that period of time, the next business on the list becomes ‘it’ and benefits from any donations made during the following month.  Businesses, of course, have greater buying power than individuals (there are exceptions!).

Who maintains the list and how the beneficiaries are communicated have not been decided (perhaps the SCCCI newsletter for the latter, Nadeem?).

I would love some feedback.  If you think it is an unworkable, hairbrained scheme, please let me know.  If you think it is a good idea but don’t think it is suitable for you because; a) you know that your suppliers are specialist who will not appear on the list of retailers; b) you have a long relationship with your current suppliers which you don’t want to jeopardise; c) you think there will be too much administration involved; d) any other reason, then please let me know.

Many thanks for your time.

Thanks for the encouragement Damien. I like the quote - was it Reagan or did he steal it from someone? Anyway, I might steal it from you if I put out any (more) publicity for ACCREWE if that is okay.

Well, I can't say the reponse from fellow members has been overwhelming but I will put that down to the fact that - for whatever reason - not many people saw this blog and will continue blindly and undeterred to try and attract revenue for local causes.

Thanks Jamie. Your last point may well be valid, which is why I've asked for feedback whenever and wherever I've forwarded this proposal. Yes, people are very busy - I'm celebrating 30 years in my 'day' job today, as it happens - which is why the idea of being able to donate without actually havin...
