A Cheshire dog trainer has made it to the finals of a national competition.

Rachel Rodgers, Head Coach of Dogs Trust Dog School Shropshire & Cheshire, has been nominated for the Animal Trainer of the Year category in the Animal Star Awards.

The awards recognise people that do great things for animals as well as animals that do extraordinary things for people. More than 700 nominations were received for the awards and Rachel is one of just five trainers to be selected.

Since Dogs Trust Dog School Shropshire & Cheshire opened in June last year Rachel has led her four strong team running classes across the two counties and helping almost 600 dogs graduate with their proud families.

She says:

"I am absolutely delighted! I couldn’t believe it when I was told. I love what I do and seeing dogs and families build a fantastic bond through positive training and of course seeing the dogs enjoying learning new things, is so rewarding. Being nominated for an award for doing something I love is the icing on the cake!"

Rachel was nominated by owners who had attended the dog school classes and was selected as a finalist by a judging panel of industry experts. She is up against other trainers from around the country including solo dog trainers and Autism Dogs CIC.

Rachel says: "At Dog School we teach the basic behaviours that dogs and owner need in their day to day lives. For example, most owners need their dog to sit when asked, walk calmly on a loose lead, come back when called on a walk, and settle down when they stop to natter to their neighbour or have a pint in the pub! So that’s what we teach we want to help ensure dogs and owners can live together happily, forever.

"Also we only use reward based methods so to have our training approach recognised in this way make me hugely proud, on behalf of my team and all the wonderful dogs who have been such wonderful pupils!"

Rachel will find out it she is to be declared the overall winner at the awards ceremony in November in Guildford.
